In light of the recent floodings in Alberta, we wanted to give you a few important tips when dealing with a flooded or water-damaged basement or home.
As your home fills with water, you are probably going to freak out a little bit. You are going to think about how you can prevent damage to your property. But, before you jump into a pool of murky debris-filled water in attempt to save your stuff, we hope you searched the internet and found this article.
Before you dive head-first into your flooded basement to rescue your kid’s hamster, take the time to find your fuse box. Shut off the power to the flooded areas, because nothing ruins a pool party like being electrocuted.
Before you wade into your basement-flavored soup, you will want to consider slapping on some waders, gloves, rubber boots, and even face masks. The more the better. If you are dealing with a city-wide flood, you will want to take special precaution, as the water could have been mixed with sewage and other unsavory liquids.
The water might still get higher, so stay calm and remove anything you don’t want to be destroyed. If you are quick, you can still save some electronic equipment. Many electronics like phones can be repaired from water damage, and sometimes if you let them dry out completely before turning them back on, they might still work.
After the worst is past you, and you have gotten the water out of your basement with pumps, a wet-dry shop vac, or just a bucket, get a number of fans in there and let them run for a while, preferably with a window open. Concrete is much more porous than you might think; and it can retain a large amount water. You will need to run fans for a couple days to get the concrete floor to be completely dry.
Lysol kills mildew. If you want to prevent more damage to your home and that musky unpleasant smell, after your place is free of water, spray the walls and floor with Lysol to prevent mildew from forming.
Between all the destruction and stress, you probably aren’t taking pictures. Which is understandable, because who wants to make a family photo album of the time your house got destroyed. However, you should take pictures for insurance reasons. Take pictures before and after the clean-up, and anything of particular value that got destroyed.
