The worst cleaning job in the entire house has got to be the toilet. If you live alone, it may not be that bad but if you have roommates or a medium to large family — yikes. Because everybody does their business in their, not just you and of course, you are the cleanest person on the face of the earth and everyone else is a crazed lunatic when they use the facilities.
When you do clean the toilet, what exactly are you using? There’s that blue stuff that goes underneath the toilet bowl rim which is supposed to cling to the sides so you can really clean it. Plus that random spray you use because it’s specifically made for the bathroom which smells of apples or roses or some other nonsense.
A closer look into your toilet cleaner and you’d be surprised what you may find. Ingredients like sodium hypochlorite, which can cause harm to your developmental, endocrine and reproductive systems of your body. Not to mention damage to your vision, kidneys, have effect on other things like urinary tracts, nervous and digestive systems.
When you make your toilet cleaner, they end up being way cheaper than the store bought brands. You also get the benefit of making a non-toxic cleaner, which is safer for your family. Every day, we can be exposed to harmful things, sometimes without knowing it so by making your cleaner, you lessen the chance of that. All it takes is just one accident with those toxic chemicals and you’re rushing to the emergency room because one of your kids tries a drink of something they shouldn’t.
Here’s what you need to make your own toilet cleaner — baking soda, essential oils and castile soap — if you didn’t know, castile soap is made with olive oil and sodium hydroxide. Take 1/4 cup of liquid castile soap (choose a scent you like such as lavender, almond, peppermint etc), 1 3/4 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 8 to 10 drops of essential oils to kill bacteria and freshen – use lemon, tea tree, eucalyptus or orange. Grab an old squirt bottle and mix all the ingredients together by swishing or shaking it around gently — makes 16 ounces or 2 cups.
The castile soap works great to get it shiny and clean, the baking soda is excellent for scrubbing without scratching the finish and the essential oils leave a wonderful scent behind and helps to disinfect. Use it like any other cleaner, squirt it around the top of the bowl then scrub with a toilet brush and squirt in the toilet bowl and use a brush to scrub it clean.
